Clean Skin Makeup Review

I always try to find natural makeup products (usually free of parabens and talc) but it can be hard to find things reasonably priced, that are the right colour and natural. My go-to natural makeup brand is Physician’s Formula but since it’s been winter in Canada FOREVER and I haven’t been outside, most of their skin products are not pale enough for me. So I ventured out to try new products and I’m very happy with what I got!

The products

I find skin makeup quite confusing, do I want powder, BB cream, tinted moisturizer, foundation or just concealer? I decided to try powdered foundation because I had read it’s great for sensitive skin and I like the ability to build it up for more coverage without looking cakey, but having the options of it not being heavy for days when I don’t need a lot of coverage. And I also got a concealer to cover dark circles, pimples or any other blemish.

Powdered Foundation

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Loose Powder, Translucent Light, 0.49 Ounce

This powdered foundation is honestly magical. You tap a little bit of the powder into the cap and use a big fluffy brush to distribute it all over your face. Then after the first layer, you can add another layer to places where you want extra coverage. With just a little bit of product, it covers so well. It doesn’t feel like you’re wearing makeup at all and it also doesn’t come off while sweating. Both concealer and the foundation have lasted hard workouts and looked better than any other skin product I’ve used. The only downside is that if you apply it and you’re wearing a dark colour it might become a little powdery. But that’s not too bad for the benefits of this product! Before applying, cover your face in moisturizer and wait for it to absorb in, then that way the powder has something to stick to and you get the hydrating of moisturizer.

Concealer

Marcelle Cc Concealer + Corrector, Light To Medium, 3.5g

The concealer I often find is too yellow or orange toned for me but this one is a great fit! The coverage is also very good and it can be added on top of the powdered foundation for maximum coverage and a flawless look. Marcelle products are on the higher end of drugstore but definitely worth it for natural products that are gentle on sensitive skin.

Seeking Style 6 – Organizing

Today’s Seeking Style is how I organize to best fit my life and keep my clothing streamlined. I think organizing your things is very important because it can save you time in the long run and you don’t need to think too much about things if they’re nicely organized and easy to find.

How I organize my clothing

Processed with VSCO with nc preset
T-shirts from darkest to lightest.
  • Tops and dresses hang up. Bottoms are all in drawers and everything else is in baskets in the closet.
  • By season. Usually, I won’t be wearing dresses in the winter so I separate everything that is hanging by season. Half for warm weather, half for cold weather.
  • By colour. Everything is hung by darkest to lightest. It seems extra picky but I like it so if it’s a dark day, I may want to wear something brighter and happier to counteract.
  • Every piece has a home. This one I think is the most important. You know where each piece goes and where it is when you need it. It’s always in the same spot in your closet or dresser. It also makes everything much faster to put away.

Main points to keep in mind while organizing clothing

  • Make things accessible and easy to see. I find I forget I own things often so it’s good to have everything where you can see it.
  • Clothes that you don’t wear that often don’t need to be front and centre, not everyday things can be more away.
  • Separating by seasons help to narrow things down by what the weather is like.
  • The initial time commitment to organizing pays off in having everything easy to see.
  •  You can maximize the clothes you own by rotating through all of the outfit possibilities.

Do you have an organizing technique?

Seeking Style 5 – Outfit Planning

This instalment of the Seeking Style Series will be on how to streamline your outfit choices and make sure you’re using all of the clothes you own.

Get everything out and ready

The first thing I do is take all of the clothes out where I can see them so I know what I’m working with. It’s pretty messy and could probably be done in a neater way, but this is what I do. I find that I often forget things that I have or there’ll be a shirt that I don’t enjoy wearing, but once it’s put together with something else I might like it a lot more and start wearing it often. The main point is to get the most out of what you own.

Putting things together

Once everything is out, it’s time to start putting outfits together and taking pictures. I start with outfits I usually wear and from there switch a piece out and see how it looks, sometimes trying on the new combos to see how it feels and if I like it. This way you can get more outfit options out of what you have. I will also look up things like “how to style utility jacket” to get more inspiration and ideas for things to go together that I would have never thought of.

Using Pinterest

Once there are some outfit combinations, I lay everything out and take pictures of them. Then I create a secret Pinterest board where I pin all of the photos I’ve taken of my outfits. The board can be sorted by season or weather to make finding outfits even easier. With a bit of initial time commitment, you can have quick and easy outfits and not have to think about them!

Summer Clothes Haul ( H&M, Ardene, Forever 21, aerie )

For most of my teenage years, I’ve found it hard to find clothing that I liked. They were either not in my style ( I didn’t really know what style I liked until recently ), they were poor quality or too expensive, so I ended up leaving stores empty-handed or returning purchases shortly thereafter. I came up with a plan ( Seeking Style! ) for myself to find clothes that were 1) reasonably priced,  2) fit in my style and I would actually wear,  3) looked good and were not terrible quality. This has been the most successful shop in awhile and I’m very happy with what I bought!

IMG_7414
Floral T-Shirt – Forever 21, Lemon Print T-Shirt – Forever 21, Burgundy Striped T-Shirt – Forever 21, Black & White Striped T-Shirt – Forever 21.

T-shirts for summer when it’s hot and I mostly wear sweaters so I needed something a bit cooler for the warmer months. I tried to get more classic patterns ( can never have too many stripes! ) to go with my style and give a bit of a vintage feel. Floral is everywhere right now and I’m so happy about it. Lemons because why not?! ( also like Lemonade ) And stripes because you can never go wrong with stripes.

Red Sweatshirt – H&M, Black Sweatshirt – Ardene.

There is nothing better than an oversized, warm and cozy sweatshirt. It’s like a constant hug. The red one is for everyday wear and says “true happiness” along the back, which I think is letting you know that it would bring happiness. The black one is not as heavy so I got it for wearing post-workout over my workout tanks.

Light Jeans – Forever 21, Black Leggings – Forever 21, Black Shorts – Ardene, Denim Shorts – Forever 21.

The light jeans are to embrace my inner hipster, sort of like the mom jean trend but I got them in skinny jeans because I like those more and high waisted which makes them more flattering and I think more comfortable. Black leggings with some detail so they don’t look too plain. The fabric is thicker so they don’t end up being see-through or anything and there are zippers on the ankles to make them less plain. Black leggings are a must have since they are super comfortable and can be worn with anything. Denim shorts are the warm weather alternative to the jeans because they’re basically the exact same thing but shorter. These were one of the few pairs that I could find that wasn’t incredibly short or somehow “distressed”. The black shorts I got so my purchase from Ardenes would get to the free shipping minimum, to be honest, but they are actually pretty comfortable and I will always wear new workout clothing!

Maxi Dress – Forever 21 ( they don’t have it in stock to link  ), Dark Blue Floral Dress – H&M, Chambray Romper – Ardene, Striped T-Shirt Dress – H&M, Red Floral Dress – H&M.

This is my favourite part of this haul, DRESSES! Summer and warm weather is the best because of summer dresses being so pretty and comfortable. I could not get the maxi dress to unwrinkle so please excuse that, it’s not that wrinkly when it’s not laying down. The maxi dress is my favourite thing that I bought, it’s made from t-shirt material ( super soft and comfy ) with a halter neck and feels like something a Greek goddess would wear. Forever 21 is almost constantly out of stock of these but once you see them I would buy it immediately since their stock goes fast! The red and the blue dress are both made of similar material and both have slightly flowy skirts. They’re very comfortable and cute, I feel like I will only wear these all summer. The T-shirt was soooo soft and easy since you just slide it on and it’s a full outfit. This is the first time I’ve had a romper, I felt like a doll with the puff around the neckline, but it’s great! I have a very long torso, though, so if I were to get other rompers they would probably also have to be off the shoulder in order for them to be comfortable.

Swimsuit Top – aerie, Bottom – aerie, Sports Bra – Forever 21, Bralette – aerie.

I had been wanting a vintage style bathing suit for awhile and had been keeping an eye out for places selling ones that weren’t so vintage that they looked like a costume, but still had the classic feel to them. I noticed aerie had them last year but didn’t get any because I haven’t gone swimming or anything in a while. This year I decided to just get it because it’s not very often that they’re in style and I knew I would get my money’s worth of enjoyment out of it. Also at aerie, I got a bralette which I had heard was really great and now I fully agree, it’s much prettier in person, super comfortable and looks nice enough that it can be worn under things and it’s not a huge deal if you can see straps or anything. I would get about 100 more. Aerie has lots of sales and things are pretty reasonably priced when they’re on sale, I also like their body positive campaign #aerieREAL, it’s also helpful to see how things would look on you because there are so many other people with different body types. The sports bra was on clearance at Forever 21 and I can also never have enough of those for working out.

What’s your favourite piece of summer clothing?

Seeking Style 4 – Where To Shop, Why Shop Online + Series Is Back!

A little while ago I started the series Seeking Style about finding your own personal style and basically how I shop for my clothes because it has become a process. The last post in the series was March ( whoops! ) so now I’m bringing it back with more tips! You can check out Seeking Style 1, 2 and 3 here!

Narrow stores down

There are so many clothing stores, so I find it best to narrow down where you will shop to just a few stores so it doesn’t become overwhelming. Figure out if you’re looking for high quality ( more expensive ) or lower quality ( cheap! ) clothing. It’s good to buy high quality for classic pieces you know you’ll wear for awhile and not get bored of or pieces that won’t go out of style, then trendy things can be fun and don’t need to be the highest quality. I get bored of my clothes pretty easily so I tend to buy things that may not be the highest quality but I get enough enjoyment out of them before they wear out.

Shop online for better deals

There are lots of benefits to shopping online, a big one is you can get much better deals! Before shopping online sometimes it’s good to go in person to stores, figure out what sizes work well for you, what stores you’re going to shop at, basically just stake out the place to figure out what you’re going to buy, then find things online that you wish to purchase. Stores will often give you a discount for signing up for their email list, don’t sign up unless you’re going to be buying things soon because the discounts expire! I have several emails and will sometimes sign up again with another email address, that’s probably not really allowed but I need the discounts. You can watch the stores website for sales and combine it with the email discount, too. There are often coupon codes to add to the deals which you can’t get in person. I also like getting packages in the mail and the anticipation for things to arrive. Overall, I just prefer shopping online for clothing.

Seeking Style 3 – Closet Clearing

Seeking Style 1 and Seeking Style 2 were about picking out what kind of clothes to purchase. Now it’s closet overhaul time!

Closet clearing

With resetting your style, a lot of old clothes might not fit your style anymore, and with new clothes coming in it’s a good idea to go through what you have and figure out what to keep.

The rules

If it doesn’t fit into these “rules” it doesn’t need to belong to you.

  1. Does it make you feel good about yourself?
  2. Is it comfy?
  3. Have you worn it within the last few months? This doesn’t work well if it’s for a different season or a special occasion.
  4. If it’s for another season, do you wear it often in that season?
  5. Does it fit with your personal uniform?
  6. Do you love it?

Giving away

For all of the things that don’t fit with your new style, you don’t love, or you don’t feel good in, it’s best to give away to clear room for the new clothing that would make you feel better and that can be used more efficiently. I wouldn’t give everything away before you get new clothes, though. I did that, by accident, and ended up only having just enough clothes to get me through to laundry day, so don’t give everything away right away!

That’s it for Closet Clearing! If you don’t love it, you don’t need it. Be sure to check out Seeking Style 1 and 2!

Seeking Style 2 – Uniform

What looks good on you

First things first, let’s talk about what looks good on you. There seems to be so many fashion rules and tips about how to dress your body type, but everyone’s different so rules don’t really apply well. Try on many different styles and things that appeal to you. The key is to just keep trying new things. It helps to bring someone along with you to get an opinion on how these new styles look on you since it’s hard to tell on yourself sometimes. Make sure it’s someone whose opinion on your fashion you value, I’m not going to ask my little brother to come shopping with me and give me opinions on how I look. Wear what makes you feel good!!! Ok, now on to the whole point of this post.

What is a “uniform”?

After going through tonnes of pins and stalking lots of fashion Instagram accounts ( see Seeking Style 1 ) I started to see the similarities in the style and outfits that I had saved and from that came each season’s “uniform”. This “uniform” method makes shopping easier and it’s a good basis for the rest of your wardrobe. The idea of this “uniform” is to have a basic outfit that is your go-to for that season. So, for example,  in summer I like to wear a pair of patterned or colourful shorts. And I found out that is the look I like from seeing how many pins I had that were a pair of shorts and a more plain top. I also like skirts and cute dresses so, my summer “uniform” options would be a top, and fun shorts or a dress, or a top and skirt. Then in fall, I like patterned pants as an alternative to the fun shorts, and sweaters because they’re so cozy, I would also wear this in the winter. Skirts and dresses with tights are also part of the fall “uniform” because those are a little too cold for winter.

How to build a uniform

It’s really quite easy. Just go through all of your pins and outfit inspiration pictures and figure out what the main common pieces are, then that’s your uniform! It’s just like dissecting outfits down to the very basic parts.

Seeking Style 1 – Stalking ( New Series! )

I love fashion. I have always loved fashion, but for the longest time, I didn’t actually wear anything for my style. In fact, I didn’t even know what my style was. This past year I decided to really put a lot of work into my personal style and wardrobe!

Welcome to the series

Seeking Style Series will be about how I found my personal style, clothes shopping, getting deals, and basically anything on how I set up my wardrobe, plus tips! And I will post them on Saturdays because Seeking Style Series Saturdays is just so much fun to say. Ok, let’s get on with the first post in the series!

Seeking style

As I said before, I’ve always loved fashion but not really known what to wear. And there was the transition from wearing little kids clothes to adult and realizing that I could expand on what I wore. I wasn’t too sure what I would like to wear, though, so that’s how the first step to Style Seeking happened.

Pin away my friends

In order to find what I would like to wear, I turned to Instagram and Pinterest, when in doubt – Instagram and Pinterest. There are so many fashion bloggers and people with good style out there on Instagram and Pinterest, it opens up a whole world of possibilities and inspiration! This took awhile because my taste changed a bit but it’s my favourite part! At first, I thought I really liked preppy sort of things and I do tend to lean towards the more preppy style, with lots of sweaters, stripes, florals and anything nautical. So that’s where I started my search. I made a Pinterest board where I pinned every outfit I slightly liked, and that style progressed into what I really like from the basis of the preppy outfits. The point is to pin as much as you can for outfit inspiration. Be an inspiration sponge!

screenshot-2017-01-15-at-15-17-41
Earlier on things I pinned that are preppy.

Narrowing it down

After pinning for awhile I found specific pieces that were common in outfits I liked, so I made separate boards for outfits with those common pieces, such as one for patterned pants. Figuring out what pieces of clothing you like specifically helps with narrowing down your search in finding outfit inspiration and more specifically your style.

screenshot-2017-01-15-at-15-17-18
A little later on, finding things more for fall.

Style queens

The fall “uniform” and some of my faves from Steffy.

While on a pinning spree I discovered that some of the same fashion bloggers kept having outfits that I loved, that’s where stalking comes in. After narrowing it down to a few bloggers I followed most of their social media and went through all of their posts and saved what I liked for inspiration. This took so. Long. But it was fun to look at such great outfits! Some of my favourite style bloggers are AshleyJulietteRebeccaNoelleSophia, and Steffy. Noelle is the main inspiration for my style, I love the touches of red, sweaters, skirts and shorts!

Through Style Stalking, I found that I like the “French Girl” style and pretty feminine outfits with still being kinda comfy and practical. I love red lipstick, splashes of red and pink are the only few colours otherwise it’s mostly neutral which keeps it classic and a little more mature, yet still young since I’m a teen. Crazy patterned pants and shorts make me happy, and sweaters are super cozy and nice in cold Canada. The point of Style Stalking is to pin, pin, pin, and start to find the similarities in the outfits to see the things you like!

The next Seeking Style will be on making your own personal “uniform”. Subscribe to my email list for updates and check out my Pinterest to see the clothing board!
