May Goals Completed

May was the last month of serious school time constraints so those were the major goals. Over the summer the goals will be much less time-dependent.

Goals completed this month

Blog

  • Continue to monetize the blog. There will be posts on how I am working on monetizing the blog in the future!
  • Have over 1,000 followers. There are currently about 1,200. Very exciting!

School

  • Finish the current courses. Finally finished them :’)
  • Hear back from the university on my application. You can read about the school’s response here!
  • Get ready for finals and complete as soon as possible. Currently working on studying for the finals, but have to wait to complete the tests.

Fitness

  • Start lifting. It’s so satisfying to lift and now my favourite workout. My current weightlifting routine is Ashley Conrad’s 21 Day Clutch but only the lifting part.
  • Begin running outside. It’s so different?! It’s not my favourite but it’s good to get outside and fresh air and enjoy the weather.
  • More yoga!! I HAVE NOT BEEN STRETCHING. But now that it’s warmer it’s much easier to stretch since muscles are not constantly cold.

Fun and random

  • Make a summer bucket list so I won’t be too bored. The Summer Bucket List can be found here!
  • Start drawing more. I have drawn twice (I think???) but that’s much more than before so I’m looking forward to drawing more and improving my technique.

This is also the 100th post on the blog!! Thank you for following everyone!

Summer 2018 Bucket List / Goals

Now that the weather is warmer and school is just about finished it’s time for a summer bucket list! I’m always lost as to what to do when there’s no school so the summer bucket list is the most important season of bucket lists.

Summer 2018 bucket list

These are a few of things I’m hoping to do this summer:

  • Eat meals outdoors and enjoy the weather.
  • Roast marshmallows over the fire pit and make s’mores. I’ve actually already done this!
  • Enjoy the outdoors more. Go for walks, sit outside, take pictures of nature, bike rides.
  • Eat summer foods. Salads, fresh food from the garden, fresh fruit from the farmers’ market, homemade popsicles (a future recipe post?!), gazpacho. This is making me hungry.
  • Make a summer playlist.
  • Travel. There are two trips I’m going on. Guess where?
  • Pick some flowers to bring inside.
  • Redecorate my room.
  • Enjoy the free time, work on art and other things.
  • Make iced herbal teas.
  • Do yoga or meditation outside at least once.
  • Have a sleepover.
  • Help out in the garden.
  • Go to the park.

Goals

The goals are the less fun, more important things I would like to accomplish over the summer.

  • Finish all of my finals. The number one thing!
  • Get my drivers license and practice driving.
  • Clear out unwanted stuff.
  • Prepare for next school year by pre-studying to make sure I didn’t forget things.
  • Keep blogging up and hit 1,500 (maybe 2,000?) followers!

What are some of the things on your summer bucket list or summer goals you’d like to complete?

18 Notes To Myself For My 18th Birthday

Tomorrow is my 18th birthday (the Internet keeps pointing out how it’s Aries season, also my fourth Friday The 13th birthday) since that is often considered the start of adulthood this post will be on a note to my future self going through adult life, mixed with “things I’ve learnt so far”.

To Peri

  1. Be friendly! People are always way less friendly than you’re expecting and it’s nice to see people who are genuinely friendly.
  2. Consistently doing things to work towards goals is key and makes them easier to achieve. Make working towards goals part of your everyday habits.
  3. Tea solves all problems, also smoothies.
  4. And good music. Even if it’s what might be considered weird.
  5. Hard workouts are satisfying and it also correlates with doing small steps towards goals everyday.
  6. Always push yourself because you’re always better than you think.
  7. Draw lots!
  8. And take picture to savour every beautiful things in the moment.
  9. Pet cuddles are great but cats might try to kill you haha.
  10. Fairy lights need to be everywhere possible.
  11. Reading isn’t too bad if you’re reading something you enjoy.
  12. Drink lots of water then drink even more because you’re probably not hydrated enough.
  13. To pre-teen Peri, you didn’t make it through without acting like a teenager at all.
  14. But also, 18 doesn’t magically make you an adult.
  15. Doing schoolwork is better than being bored. And nothing good comes from procrastinating.
  16. The outdoors is your friend but mosquitoes aren’t. Otherwise it’s fine.
  17. Good clothes make you very happy.
  18. And always do your best.

This post felt very cheesy. 😂 I’m curious, do you all like having big birthday celebrations or do you keep it lowkey? What kinda of things do you do for your birthday?

Trying Meditation

Enjoy the completely unrelated photo.

A few weeks ago I started to include meditation with my workout routine to help mental health along with physical.

How to get started

Step 1 – find an app or videos

I tried several apps at the same time ( got to check out all the options ) to try to find one that I liked the best. It’s good to have one that has topics that are applicable to you and if they’re guided meditations, with someone who has a voice that you can listen to for a bit.  My favourite apps were Simple Habit Meditation – it costs money to subscribe but my friend gave me a free trial – and HeadSpace. HeadSpace is a good starting off point to learn the basics. After using the apps for a bit and once I felt like I knew what I was doing I went to YouTube videos for more options. My favourite has been Boho Beautiful ( it sounds cheesy but she has a very calming voice ), there is a daily meditation playlist which focuses on self-acceptance and love.

Step 2 – fit it into your daily routine

At first, I tried to work meditation in 3 places in my routine, to see if I could do it that often and to find when worked best. First thing in the morning, while stretching post-workout and right before bed. In the morning it’s a good way to start the day being calm and having a clear mind. I find it allows me to stretch better because of being relaxed and focused in the moment. Right before bed is a great way to sleep better and calm yourself down.

Step 3 – be consistent!

Best way to form a habit is to stick with it until it becomes part of your day. This can be hard on days when your mind is racing and it feels difficult to calm it, but that’s when you need it most.

Some benefits I’ve found

  • My mind feels calmer. The main reason to start meditation. It really helps with anxiety and sleep.
  • Less negative thoughts, more appreciative, more positive. I’ve been trying to consciously work on this, too, so the meditation didn’t magically solve this, but it has helped. Especially with being present and trying not to worry.
  • More focus, which also helps during workouts. If you try to incorporate meditation into something you need a lot of focus for or during your workouts it can improve your performance because you’re living in the moment and your mind is either clear on thinking about whatever it is you need focus for.
  • Feels like you have more control over your mind. If you start thinking negatively you can use meditation as a tool to stop it or at least redirect.

It seems so simple yet it feels like it’s made a substantial difference in how I think and I would highly recommend learning how to meditate. Have you tried meditation?

February Goals Completed

It’s March! Made it through February and it’s one step closer to spring. There wasn’t a huge amount of goals completed this month but the ones I did complete were pretty major.

Goals completed this month

Blog

  • Hit 1,000 followers. There are now over 1,000 followers on the blog and it’s crazy! New goal 2,000?! That might be a bit high but it’s going to happen.
  • Get my own domain and site. The blog move was a little tedious, trying to figure all of the bugs and switching all the links over, but now the blog has a permanent home.
  • Set up ads. You may have noticed them on the blog, adding them will help with paying for university!
  • Post more regularly on Instagram. You can see my posts here!
  • Start the Newsletter back up. It is a work in progress but the sign-up page is back. Sign up for future newsletters here!

School

  • Get everything caught up. Somehow I was a term behind in math and several ahead in my other courses?? A side effect of being homeschooled. I finished my last math courses, started the new one and have caught up there. I’m also almost done half of my courses for this year.
  • It’s not really school related but I finished reading Tom Sawyer which I was reading digitally and kept forgetting about.
  • Come up with some backup plans in case I do not get into university. I talk about the process here.

Fun and random

It was a very productive month for the blog and thank you, everyone, for reading and helping the blog grow! What are some of your goals for March?

January Goals Completed

One of my 2018 goals was to get things done and actually complete lots of goals. It’s only one month into 2018 and I feel like I’ve already done some conquering!

Goals completed this month

Blog

  • Post more on the blog and get views up. There have been over 1,000 views this month on the blog! Thank you, everyone, for helping with this one! And we’re getting very close to 1,000 followers.

School

  • Finish transcripts and course descriptions. You can read about it here and here.
  • Take the SATs. Technically I did this in December but I posted about it not that long ago.
  • Send in my university application. There are still a few extracurricular forms to fill out but otherwise, it’s done!

“Adulting”

  • Get driver’s license. I finished the studying for the first part of a driver’s license in Ontario, now I just need to go and take the test.

Fun and random

It’s been a productive month and I’m quite happy with that. Now I’ll have to make more goals so I still have ones to work on throughout the rest of the year.

Bad Day Lists Because It’s Been Dreary Outside

When it’s dull and gloomy out it can be easy to not be in the best mood. On days that start to feel bad I go to my Bad Day List of things to do when it’s been a bad day and try to turn it around.

The happiness board

The first thing I will do is look at my Happiness board on Pinterest. It’s a lot of reading but I pin everything from nice little things in life ( like tiny soft kitty foreheads, the sound of rain, etc. ) to things that make life better. If there are things I want to be reminded of often, I print them out and put it on my wall or somewhere where I can see it often.

The Bad Day List

This is my list of things to do when the day starts to feel bad.

  • Write down 10 things that you’re happy exist, no matter how small. And 5 things you’re thankful for at this exact moment. Example – I am sitting inside with a fuzzy blanket when it’s cold and rainy out.
  • Have some food. Most of the times, I’m just hangry ( does this happen to other people?? ) so getting a bit of food makes life a lot better. It also helps since food releases good chemicals when you eat it. A very good choice is a banana or a bit of chocolate.
  • Listen to music you like and do a “mind dump” in a journal. This helps to get everything out and good music is very healing.
  • Make a new playlist or make a calming playlist to help.
  • Distract yourself! I’m very bad at this, but it’s super important so you don’t wallow. Doing anything will help, watch a TV show, your favourite movie, read something, anything will help. I somehow always end up watching Beyonce dance performances.
  • Help someone or do something nice for someone else. It makes you feel good to make others happy and it’s just overall very fulfilling.
  • More sleep!! This just helps everything so much. It’s very important.
  • Make some change, getting out of routine can help by making things more exciting.
  • Exercise! Dance, find a workout video on YouTube, go for a walk. Just moving.

What are some things you do to turn a bad day around?

Goals Of 2018

Happy New Year, everyone! As I had said last year, I LOVE NEW YEARS GOALS! Sometimes they stress me out a bit, but I find it so pleasing when I’ve completed goals, and writing them down helps set the direction for where I want to go.

This year and this year’s motto

I have a lot of goals this year, big and small, and I think it’ll be a bit of a crazy one and definitely different from others, but I’m excited! Every year I choose a one-word motto to basically sum up the goals or overall what I’m going for in the next year. This year is going to be “contrast” or a not one-word motto of “get things done”. Work hard, but take breaks.

2018 goals

I break the goals down into different categories of my life to keep them more organized and simplified. These are a few of my major goals:

School

  • Finish making transcripts for my courses to send to universities.
  • Complete uni application.
  • Get into the school of choice!
  • Finish off all of my high school courses!

Blog

  • Get blog to 1,000 followers!
  • Get blog to make money to help out with uni costs.
  • Post more frequently.

Health and fitness

  • Run a half marathon, if I’m feeling crazy. Or a 10k is much more reasonable.
  • Do more ab and upper body workouts!
  • Try other forms of exercise and sports.
  • More yoga and stretching.

Fun and creativity

  • Work on art more.
  • And photography.
  • Travel if there are opportunities to.
  • Make a reading list and read more.

“Adulting”

  • Get driver’s license.
  • Budget and learn more personal finance.

What are some of your major goals this year? Hope everyone has an amazing 2018!!

Goals Completed 2017

At the very start of this year, I posted some of my 2017 goals, so now that it’s the end of the year it’s time to revisit them and see how far I’ve come!

Last years goals and how I progressed

  • To be less anxious. I’ve often struggled with anxiety so I would like to work on keeping it under control and managing stress.

This has actually improved A LOT! First, I think with just a little bit of age it helps since it seems like anxiety can be a teenager thing. I learnt more about anxiety and how it works which helped on how to overcome it. Journalling, harder workouts, and consciously trying to relax are among some of the things that have helped me.

  • To be kinder to myself. Sometimes I just get a little too critical of myself.

I hope this has improved, I haven’t tried too hard, to be honest, but I think it’s better.

  • Take more risks. I’ve always been afraid of risks but there’s not a lot of fun in not taking any.

I didn’t take any big risks, which is good! But there were times I think I went out of my comfort zone and that’s the main goal!

  • Get school things organized, make a new schedule style, stay motivated, and make it more enjoyable.

Motivation for school has not been too bad this year since it’s my last year of high school I pretty much just want to get everything done! It makes it more enjoyable when you’re more motivated, too.

  • Get things together for university.

Yes!! Definitely have made huge progress with this! I will keep posting about my progress and working towards university as much as I can. You can read about my progress here!

  • Keep pushing myself in my workouts and maybe do a 5k or something like that.
I did not run a 5k but I built up a lot more strength over the year and can now run faster and for longer than before!
Completing goals is always a nice little victory. Let me know goals you’re proud of that you completed and good luck with your new goals!

2017 Goals

I really love goal setting, it’s probably the OCD in me that wants to take some control in life. Plus it’s so nice after accomplishing goals. And I think it helps me get closer to where I want to be in life? Or at least it makes me think I am, which is good enough.

Where I want to be in a year.

The first thing I do before setting the new goals is try to imagine where I want to be at this time next year. Where I am? What have I accomplished? Has there been major changes in my life? How do I feel? This often doesn’t actually help at all because I can barely imagine where I’m going to be tomorrow let alone a year. It also might set too high expectations, but I like to think I’m a pretty reasonable person.

For the next year I haven’t really pictured where I want to be in a year. This year I was thinking more like “If I could do this past year again, what would I do differently?” I have been craving change. I want to change lots of things this year but not go too crazy. My motto is “rebirth” and “live”.  Just improvement and change.

A few of the things I would like to accomplish over the coming year:

  1. To be less anxious. I’ve often struggled with anxiety so I would like to work on keeping it under control and managing stress.
  2. To be kinder to myself. Sometimes I just get a little too critical of myself.
  3. Enjoy being content more. It sounds kind of weird but I like being not happy sometimes or I take being content for granted.
  4. Take more risks. I’ve always been afraid of risks but there’s not a lot of fun in not taking any.
  5. Work harder on being social. It doesn’t just magically happen.
  6. Get school things organized, make a new schedule style, stay motivated, and make it more enjoyable.
  7. Get things together for university.
  8. Job shadow more and/or volunteer, get a job.
  9. Learn to drive!! I keep putting it off.
  10. Keep pushing myself in my workouts and maybe do a 5k or something like that.

Categories

I have a big binder that I write down all the goals in and can keep coming back to and see what I have accomplished and add in more. There are 12 categories I have made for myself.

  1. Health and fitness
  2. Self improvement
  3. School
  4. Career
  5. Finance
  6. Style and self care
  7. Interdependence
  8. Friends, social, relationships
  9. Creativity
  10. Fun
  11. Blog
  12. Dance

I kind of know what things I want to accomplish in each of these categories and just take a day to write out all of the goals then make a game plan to get these things done!

Game plan

This is the really hard part that I like to procrastinate! But if I’m feeling productive I’ll try to make a plan on how to complete these goals. I haven’t done this for this year yet, but it’s coming!

A couple months ago I read 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens ( Honestly really good but sometimes I couldn’t stand the cheesiness, I would definitely recommend reading it, though! ) and it was really helpful with tips on setting goals, prioritizing, and completing the goals.

I’ll be working on my goals for 2017 throughout the year, but this is how I’m going to start out. What are some of your new year’s goals?
