18 Notes To Myself For My 18th Birthday

Tomorrow is my 18th birthday (the Internet keeps pointing out how it’s Aries season, also my fourth Friday The 13th birthday) since that is often considered the start of adulthood this post will be on a note to my future self going through adult life, mixed with “things I’ve learnt so far”.

To Peri

  1. Be friendly! People are always way less friendly than you’re expecting and it’s nice to see people who are genuinely friendly.
  2. Consistently doing things to work towards goals is key and makes them easier to achieve. Make working towards goals part of your everyday habits.
  3. Tea solves all problems, also smoothies.
  4. And good music. Even if it’s what might be considered weird.
  5. Hard workouts are satisfying and it also correlates with doing small steps towards goals everyday.
  6. Always push yourself because you’re always better than you think.
  7. Draw lots!
  8. And take picture to savour every beautiful things in the moment.
  9. Pet cuddles are great but cats might try to kill you haha.
  10. Fairy lights need to be everywhere possible.
  11. Reading isn’t too bad if you’re reading something you enjoy.
  12. Drink lots of water then drink even more because you’re probably not hydrated enough.
  13. To pre-teen Peri, you didn’t make it through without acting like a teenager at all.
  14. But also, 18 doesn’t magically make you an adult.
  15. Doing schoolwork is better than being bored. And nothing good comes from procrastinating.
  16. The outdoors is your friend but mosquitoes aren’t. Otherwise it’s fine.
  17. Good clothes make you very happy.
  18. And always do your best.

This post felt very cheesy. 😂 I’m curious, do you all like having big birthday celebrations or do you keep it lowkey? What kinda of things do you do for your birthday?

Liebster Award ( Tag Tuesday )

Sorry for not really posting last week! I wasn’t feeling very motivated to do anything but hopefully, I should be a bit more back on track now.

I was nominated for the Liebster Award by the lovely Beatrice and Janah! Thank you so much, you two! If you haven’t seen their blogs yet I would check them out.

What is the Liebster Award?

It’s an award that’s given to bloggers by other bloggers–it’s basically the internet’s version of the Emmys (I guess). It’s a great way for bloggers to discover new blogging friends and support others in the blogging community. The word Liebster is German for sweet, kind, nice, dear, beloved, lovely, pleasant, valued, and endearing, along with a few other really nice words, so…it’s truly an honour.

Rules

1.) Thank the person who nominated you and provides a link to their blog site. (If you accept the nomination, please notify me so I don’t miss your post! 😉 )

2.) Answer the questions from the nominee.

3.) Nominate other bloggers and write them several new questions.

4.) List the rules and display the Liebster Award logo on your post.

Beatrice’s questions

1.) What’s your favourite TV show? Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt!

2.) What do you do after a stressful day? Make a cup of tea, sit in bed, watch Netflix, and maybe message one of my friends to talk about the day or just to talk.

3.) How do you motivate yourself on days when you don’t feel the motivation? I really struggle with this so I would probably just stay unmotivated lol.

4.) What are the top three things you love about yourself?

  1. I think my eyes look cool and eyes are just fascinating.
  2. I’m pretty confident and I’m not too sure how, so I love that it didn’t seem to take a lot of work.
  3. I love that I generally work very hard.

5.) What do you think about Into the Shadows? 😉 Looks good! I’m so impressed when people write books.

Janah’s questions

MY QUESTIONS:

  1. Pick a word that best describes the Internet. Insane.
  2. What is the most offensive thing someone has said to you online? I’ve been very lucky and people have generally been super nice to me online and if they haven’t I don’t remember it.
  3. What is your phone model and what’s the best thing about it? I have an iPhone 6S I believe. My favourite thing is the sparkly case I have, right now.
  4. What is your most used social media platform? Snapchat.
  5. If you were to choose one social media to use for the rest of your life, which social media would you choose? Snapchat. Even though, it can get annoying.
  6. If you can take someone back from the dead, who would you choose and why? This is a really hard question. I don’t know who I would bring back.

The award was created by Okoto Enigma, so thanks to her, too, for making it!

Tah dahhh

3 things about myself

  • I love baking. Having a peanut allergy has forced me to make my own baked goods and get good at it.

  • I actually don’t really like cake but I always think I do. I make a cake. I think I like cake. I try a piece. I don’t like it. Then the cake cycle repeats.
  • I hate the smell of chocolate cake. I’ve purposefully left the house because a chocolate cake was baking.

I think I’m in a baking mood. The Cake Boss theme song has been stuck in my head all day.

Questions

Stella’s questions

  1. What is your zodiac? I have an Aries sun, Leo moon and Cancer rising. I’ve been kind of zodiac obsessed lately, it’s so fun to see if it actually comes true and how people of the same signs are similar.
  2. What is your favourite season? I used to really love fall, but I enjoyed last spring and summer a lot more than the fall.
  3. Do you have any pets? If so, tell us about them! I have 2 cats and a dog. They are kind of annoying a lot of the time but I still love them.
  4. What is your favourite band/musician? Beyoncé, Troye Sivan and Amy Winehouse.
  5. What is your favourite object in your bedroom? My bed?

Alli’s questions

  1.  What has been your favourite age so far? Why? I don’t really know, I’m too young for this 😂 Let’s go with 5 because I can kinda remember that and I remember going to Disney World and can’t pick out any bad things from that year LOL
  2.  If you had to be stuck in a room with one person for 72 hours, who would it be? I don’t know if I would drive myself crazier alone than if I was with someone. I feel like if I chose anyone I would get really angry at them then we’d both just end up mad.
  3.   What’s one of your guilty pleasures? Lattes. I have a bad latte addiction and a desire to learn latte art.
  4.  What’s something you should never look up on google images? Have you looked this up before? Basically anything. All Google image searches go bad at some point.
  5.   Who? What? Where? When? and Why? Me? A person? In Canada? At 11:30 am? Because I’m alive and here?

Beatrice’s questions

  1.  After a bad day, who’s the first person you go to?  My mum or one of my close friends.
  2. What’s something you’re scared of? Fish, death, and being upside down.
  3. What do you think of my new book, Into the Shadows? 😅😅😅 I’m sorry, I had to… I read some of the preview on Amazon and it looks interesting! I applaud you for writing a book, I think I’d get really bored of it.
  4. What’s the last thing you ate? Tikka masala curry! Curry is my comfort food.
  5.  If you were stranded on an island, what are the top three things you’d HAVE to have with you? A helicopter to get off the island. A pilot to fly the helicopter. And some food so I don’t get hangry and make the pilot mad since they’d be my only way out.

One Lovely Blog Award

My second award!! I’m so excited for this!

This is the One Lovely Blog Award! I was nominated by Eva from Beyond The Precipice. Eva is a Canadian author and she takes GORGEOUS pictures of nature, which I especially love since I feel like I can take Canada for granted and think it’s not that beautiful but Eva really highlights the beauty in her pictures. She also has great writing tips, and was wonderful for nominating me for this award so thank you so much! Edit: I was also nominated by Naly from It’s Naly! Thank you so much, Naly! Naly’s blog is filled with great tips and is one of my favourite lifestyle blogs out there!

 When you get this award,

• Thank the person who nominated you and link their blog

• Add the One Lovely Blog Award to your post

• Share 7 things about yourself

• Pass this on to as many people as you like (max 15)

• Include this set of rules

• Inform your nominees

7 things about myself

  • I dance.

I’ve kind of talked about this before, but I’ll go into it a bit. I started dancing when I was about 3 and just learnt to walk. I took ballet for a bit then when I was 5 I started jazz dance, too! Then we moved and I did gymnastics for a bit until I realized I couldn’t get very far without ever going upside down. I started ballet again when I was 13 and now I’m in competitive jazz and tap!

  • I’m actually a really terrible dancer.

If it hasn’t been choreographed, I am really bad LOL I sort of just jump around so no freestyling for me.

  • Oh and from the first one, too, I hate being upside down.

Like really, really hate it. One of my greatest fears.

  • I love Anne of Green Gables.

Those books were my life for a little while. Love everything about them and everything that has to do with them.

  • I have a bad case of Wanderlust.

I should do a post on this?! For years I’ve been making a mental list of places I really want to go to in my life, so yes I will make a post then it won’t be a mental list anymore.

  • I used to be really obsessed with horses.

That was all I would read about, so now I know lots about different breeds and some horse care.

  • I sort of learnt to ride in Kentucky.

The pony I had was really stubborn and old and fat and wouldn’t move LOL I was also slightly terrified so I didn’t get very far in my riding.

My nominees

The Bold And The Bitchy – Because I find her posts entertaining.

Cailia’s Report Card – She has great tips and I enjoy her Instagram posts!

Life of a Teenage Ranter – Just one word – yes. I can relate lol

Reviews on Life  – I like posts and especially the blog theme!

The S Word – Socializing ( #homeschoolproblems )

Every homeschooler has probably been asked at one point “But how do you make friends?” or had relatives ask about how you’re getting “socialized”. It makes me think of when my family had just gotten our dog and we were doing training at PetSmart and they said to make sure the dog was socialized so he wouldn’t be afraid of other dogs.

History of my socializing?

I’m not going to lie, I haven’t done the best with socializing. That just made it sound like I have never seen people, or I’m a hermit, but no, here’s the story:

My first friends were probably my neighbours when I was really little then at some point really early on we joined the local homeschool group and were quite active in there, plus when you’re little you kind of have to go with your parents everywhere so I was really comfortable with talking to adults. I was always called shy, though, probably because I wasn’t that crazy of a little kid and would just stand by and join in the conversation with my parents and other adults when it seemed fit. We lived near a park so I would make friends with kids who regularly visited the park, I took lots of different lessons, there wasn’t a lack of socialization at all! When I was 8 we moved into a typical suburban neighbourhood with the hopes of more kids my age around. It took awhile, but eventually, I met other kids in the neighbourhood ( and I’m still good friends with some today! ) and we had a pack of lots of kids that would roam the neighbourhood. Plus on top the neighbourhood pack, I still had Taekwondo, homeschool group, and other classes.

When I was 11 we moved to Louisville, Kentucky. It was a huge change, and I had to leave all my friends from Canada. At that point, I think the stress from moving had kinda gotten to me and I was actually a little relieved to be left alone for awhile. Looking back that would have probably been a time when I needed to have friends most, but live and learn! I really didn’t feel like I needed them, though, so it didn’t bother me then. I made a few online friends from games I would play, and I would try to Skype my friends back in Canada at least once a week, plus we were exploring the new city so I wasn’t sheltered or alone. We tried to get into the homeschool group there a bit, and I took a couple classes and met some people there but didn’t really become friends. We moved into a neighbourhood in Kentucky and my brother made good friends with the neighbour boy which was good because I didn’t always have to join in the games but could when I wanted to.

After 2 years of being in Kentucky, we moved back to where we originally came from in Canada and I got to see a few of my old friends again. A lot of the homeschoolers had gone off to high school or went the next year, so I didn’t really see a lot of them again. This is where things kind of went the wayside. Being back in the same city and older so I didn’t have to go with my parents everywhere, I started staying home more and was less motivated to actually meet friends. A little while after moving back, though, I joined a  dance class and did some things in the homeschool group. I honestly don’t remember 2014 for some reason, but I still didn’t get out too much and made a few new online friends again. 2015 was pretty much the same, and so was 2016. I didn’t really realize how much work one has to put into making friends especially if you’re homeschooled and have to try to get out more. I’m naturally a pretty friendly person, though, so that isn’t an issue. I’ve figured out several ways to get out and make friends and this year I got this!

Some tips

It has been a bit of a struggle, and something that I wish I had realized doesn’t magically happen and takes work and is important, but now I’ve figured it out and can work on it!
If you are homeschooling or going to start and this is a concern my advice would be to figure out how much socialization you need, are you an introvert or extrovert? Then work with that and try to plan things out of the house, take opportunities to do things. If you feel like you’re being deprived of social interaction then just do even the smallest thing to get out or talk to people, even if it’s through social media or on the phone. Like I said before, it doesn’t just magically happen, you have to go out and be friendly yourself. And if you’re a homeschool parent, don’t forget it’s important for you to get out, too and talk to people if you can! I know it’s wayyyy easier said than done but with some effort, it starts to become easier.
